thisclose to sending a Homecoming crowd away with the first win in program history as the Cougars dropped a heartbreaking 41-40 decision to King's in two overtimes, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
King's thwarted MU's two-point conversion attempt to hold on to win.
The Cougars rallied for a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, including one with less than a minute to play, to force overtime.
In the extra session,
Jeff Puckett connected with
Juwan Petties-Jackson for a 23-yard touchdown to give the Cougars their first lead, 34-27.
King's answered on their first possession and took a 41-34 lead on their second OT drive.
Tosin Adeyemo bulled his way in from the one yard line to give the Cougars a chance for their first win.
On the two-point attempt, Puckett rolled to his right and looked for Petties-Jackson in the back of the end zone, but the pass was broken up by a King's defender.
Trailing 20-6 midway through the third quarter, the Cougars began their comeback.
Tosin Adeyemo rushed four times for 24 yards as the Cougars moved the ball to near midfield.
Facing fourth and one from the King's 45, Puckett raced straight up the middle for a touchdown to make it 20-13 with 6:00 left in the period.
King's drove into the red zone on the next drive, MU's
Cory Dickerson blocked a 40-yard field goal attempt to give MU the ball.
Puckett and
Frank Santarsiero combined to move the ball to the King's 45 yard line.
After Puckett picked up a first down at the King's 16 yard line, he rolled to his left and found
Colton Pyne who made a nice over the shoulder catch in the end zone to tie game, 20-20, midway through the fourth quarter.
King's marched 62 yards in just five plays to re-take the lead, 27-20.
Starting on their own 17 with 7:02 to play, the Cougars got a key third down conversion from Santarsiero and a 19-yard run by Puckett for a first down in King's territory.
Puckett again connected with Pyne on third and 12 for a first down at the King's 25 yard line.
Puckett converted another third down for a new set of downs at the King's 15 and went 11 yards on first down for a first and goal at the four.
After a short gain on first down and a pair of incompletions, Puckett's second effort on fourth and goal put him the end zone with the game-tying score with 13 seconds to play.
King's controlled much of the first quarter as the Monarch built a 13-0 lead.
Following a missed field goal try, the Cougars took over on their own 20 with 6:40 left in the first half.
Puckett scampered 12 yards for a first down and then found Petties-Jackson behind the defense for a 40-yard gain to the King's28 yard line.
Puckett went off right tackle for 14 yards and cut to his left on the next play for nine yards to set up first and goal.
Adeyemo powered his way in from the two and the PAT pulled MU within 13-6 with one minute left before halftime.
Puckett ended the day with 175 rushing with two touchdowns, including a 45-yarder. Adeyemo added 55 yards and the first two scores of his career.
Puckett added 119 yards passing for two scores.
Petties-Jackson had eight catches for 98 yards and a score and Pyne had two catches for 30 yards and his first career TD.
Hunter Pates led the MU defense with 10 tackles while
Brandon Salazar and
Rob Hart both had eight stops. Hart also had his first career interception.
Misericordia, 0-5/0-4 MAC, is off next week and will travel to Widener, October 19. King's picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-3/1-2 MAC.
