Stevenson Pulls Away Late to Down Cougars

11/2/2013 5:20:00 PM

Box Score Stevenson broke open a seven-point game with 38 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 48-3 win over Misericordia, Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs held the Cougars to 201 yards of total offense, including just 133 yards rushing.

MU quarterback Jeff Puckett had a team-high 81 yards to move to 999 yards on the season.

The Cougars took an early 3-0 after taking over deep in Stevenson territory following a botched punt by the Mustangs.

Misericordia moved inside the Stevenson 20 yard line on a six yard gain by Puckett, but were held to a 36-yards field by Patrick Nevins with 9:42 to play in the first quarter.

Stevenson tied it six minutes later with a 32-yard field goal.

Misericordia was forced to punt on the ensuing possession and Stevenson went 47 yards in seven plays to take a 10-7 lead after one quarter.

Following an MU punt, Stevenson moved deep into MU territory before Kevin Bagasevich thwarted the threat with an interception in the end zone.

After exchanging punts, MU put together a scoring threat of its own as Puckett picked up a pair of first downs on the ground to move the ball into Stevenson territory.

Tom Stelzer picked up eight yards on a first down reception and Colton Pyne hauled in a 27-yard toss from Puckett to set up first and goal at the six yard line.

The drive stalled there, however, and the Cougars' field goal attempt was wide left and the first half ended with MU trailing, 10-3.

The Mustangs opened the second half with a 61-yard kickoff return and converted into a touchdown and a 17-3 lead early in the third quarter.

Misericordia answered with another long drive as the Cougars went 67 yards in 18 plays.

Starting at their own 32, Puckett carried most of the load on the drive, including a 16-yard gain to set up first and goal at the Stevenson five yard line.

Carries by Puckett and Frank Santarsiero moved the ball to the one, but Stevenson stuffed the fourth-and-goal play and took over on downs.

Stevenson used a combination of turnovers and big plays to score 31 points over the final 12 minutes.

Hunter Pates led the MU defense with 10 tackles.

Misericordia, 0-8, will host Albright in its home finale, Saturday at 1:00.
