Box Score The Misericordia University football dropped its 2013 road opener at Lycoming, 52-14, Saturday afternoon in Williamsport.
Freshman quarterback
Ryan Kurtz had a touchdown to lead the Cougars and
Phil Arnold returned an interception for a score.
Kurtz led the Cougars with 48 yards rushing in the second half.
After Lycoming jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter, Arnold cut the deficit in half with a 52-yard interception return to make it 14-7 with 3:53 left in the opening period.
The Warriors added a score in the final minute of the first quarter and scored three times in the second period to take a 42-7 lead at halftime.
Lycoming stretched the lead to 49-7 with a third quarter score and added a field goal to make it 52-7 early in the fourth.
The Cougars tallied their first offensive score of the day when Kurtz guided a 12-play, 70-yard drive.
After
Tyler Hessert returned the kickoff 15 yards to the MU 30,
Carmine Verducci scampered 23 yards on first down to the Lycoming 47 yard line.
Kurtz connected with
Dean Lucchesi for 11 yards to convert a third-and-long for a first down at the Warriors 37.
Kurtz picked up 16 yards on a keeper for a new set of downs at the Lycoming 20.
Rushes by Verducci and Kurtz set up a fourth-and-two and Kurtz picked up another first down to give the Cougars a first-and-goal at the nine yard line.
Kurtz ran eight yards on first down and punched in from a yard away on the next play to make it 52-14 with 10:01 remaining.
Tim Martin and
Rob Hart led the MU defense with eight tackles and Arnold added seven stops.
Misericordia, 0-3 (0-2 MAC) will return home to host Wilkes, September 28 at 1:00.
