Cougars Fall at #23 Del Val

Box Score Twenty-third ranked Delaware Valley College football team used three second quarter touchdowns to pull away from Misericordia University in a 41-7 win, Saturday in Doylestown.

Jeff Puckett led the Cougars with 107 yards rushing while Ryan Kurtz added 61 yards on the ground and Brandon Leap got the Cougars on the scoreboard with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Brian Hart and Brandon Salazar led the MU defense with nine tackles each while Anthony Vega had two tackles and forced a fumble that was recovered by Anthony Buffa.

The Cougars held the high-scoring Aggies to one touchdown in the first quarter and trailed 6-0 after the opening period.

Misericordia took the opening kickoff and Puckett and Robin Custodio combined to give MU a pair of first downs on the ground before being forced to punt from midfield.

Del Val responded by going 80 yards in five plays to take a 6-0 lead.

After exchanging punts, the Cougars took over at their own one yard line with 6:15 to play in the first quarter.

Puckett picked up seven yards on first down and Kurtz gained four to give MU a new set of downs.

Puckett scampered for 23 yards on second down to move the ball to the 37. Kurtz sandwiched a four-yard gain between two incompletions and Patrick Newins' punt pinned the Aggies at their own nine yard line.

Aaron Wilmer found Rasheed Bailey for 18 yards and Tyler Bing ran for 36 yards to get into MU territory.

The Aggies used a 16-yard catch by Bobby Marterella to convert a third-and-13 to move to the Misericordia 15 as time expired in the first quarter.

The Aggies scored three plays later to take a 13-0 lead.

Randy Custodio returned the kickoff 17 yards and Kurtz gained 23 yards on three carries to start the ensuing drive and Puckett went 11 yards on third down to cross midfield.

The drive stalled at the 43 and Newins' punt was downed at the Del Val three.

The Aggies used a 47-yard grab by Chris Smallwood to ignite a 10-play, 97-yard scoring drive to go ahead, 20-0, with 4:23 to play before halftime.

Michael Cheslock did the work on the ground as the Cougars again moved the ball across midfield before punting in the final minute.

The teams exchanged punts to start the third quarter before Bing broke a 25-yard run to lead a scoring drive as the Aggies went up, 34-0.

Del Val took advantage of a blocked punt and went 35 yards for a touchdown and 41-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

MU took over at its own four yard line following an Aggie punt with 12:33 remaining.

Kurtz gave the Cougars a first down with an 11-yard rush and Leap hit Tyler Row for 17 yards to convert a third-and-nine.

Leap picked up 20 yards on two carries for a first down at the Del Val 47 and hit Petties-Jackson for 17 yards at the 35.

Facing second-and-16, Kurtz ran for eight yards and grabbed a seven-yard pass from Leap to set up fourth-and-one, but the Aggies defense held.

Vega forced a fumble on third down and Buffa recovered to give MU the ball at the Del Val 11 yard line.

After a five-yard run by Leap, a pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Del Val two yard line.

Leap scored on the next play to make it 41-7 with less than a minute to play.

Misericordia, 1-6 (1-5 MAC), will host Lycoming, November 1.
