Sweeney was a standout swimmer and achieved the highest honor by winning the 200 butterfly at the 1999 NCAA Division III Championships.

In addition, he earned All-American honors in the 100 butterfly in 1999 as well as the 200 butterfly in 1998.

Sweeney led the team in scoring four times and was a three-time team MVP.

He still holds five individual school records and three CM pool records.
